Alcan write up Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1
Alcan write up - Case Study Example Some of the trends in its mergers and acquisitions are indications of this. However, the company has not sought to benefit from operational synergies that are available to it. Organizing Model ââ¬â In this model several business unit or process leaders in the company make there own decisions. This is akin to a feudal system. This indicates that a decentralized approach is taken towards the organization and management of resources. Architecture ââ¬â The IT governance style appears to be that of anarchy as each user group pursues its own IT agenda. This has resulted in over 1000 applications. Of this over 400 relates to finance. This has been that way even as the CFO as head of Corporate IT. Standards ââ¬â The governance style of anarchy prevails as there are really no set standards to follow. The various user groups in each business unit appear to do as they please without any regard for what is happening in similar areas in the organization. Resources ââ¬â Each business unit decides on the resources that it needs. No attempt is made to determine if the competencies exist in the organization. As a result 80% of IT budget is spent on outsourcing, equipment and software. This would seem to imply that with all the mergers and acquisitions the competencies in IT has not improved but has only gotten worst. Governance is structured in this way at Alcan because after mergers and acquisitions take place the companies basically retain their identity as separate business units. There is no attempt to benefit from economies of scale in terms of merging similar IT projects. Thus on Oueletteââ¬â¢s arrival three separate SAP implementation were taking place at the same time. The advantages of this type of decentralized structure are that: it allows the CIO to concentrate on key IT decisions; and the business unit executives are free to carry out their management function as they were used to before the merger. They operate as before the merger and

Murder Mystery story Essay Example for Free
Murder Mystery story Essay This is also securing the readers perspective on Sherlock Holmes. All through the Speckled Band Sherlock Holmes displays his distinct ability to decipher the exact meaning of a situation. At the same time that Holmes is doing this, the reader becomes more and more confused about the situation in hand. This is where Conan Doyles first person narrative becomes crucial to the story. He uses Dr. Watson as a translator of Holmes genius. Watson helps the readers understand exactly whats going on and, in a way, puts their minds at ease. This is typical of Arthur Conan Doyle. He creates a psychological battle in the minds of the reader. He uses Holmes to create a trouble with interpretation of sequences past and to come and then simplifies it through Watson. This is what makes all Conan Doyles stories so brilliant for the reader. Conan Doyle uses Holmes to build up suspense with a possible flaw in Holmes brilliance when he declares that the committer of the crime is more cunning than himself. This is essential to the story. Holmes has been portrayed as the best detective in England up to this point and now he himself declares that he has been defeated. This creates extreme suspense for the reader. Also among Holmes abilities is his ability to disguise himself. He makes himself appear to be a person with distinct business at the Roylott estate. This fellow should think that we had come as architects or on some definite business. This adds to Holmes list of excellencies. He is now toying with the mind of the villain in order to accomplish he task he has been set. The unexpected ending. By the end of the Speckled band Doyle has created such suspense and confusion in the minds of the readers that they are waiting in dire anticipation to find out how it will end. The Speckled Band is, in fact, a poisonous snake native to India, the living place of Dr. Roylott for several years. Roylott used the snake to make its way through the ventilation and into the bedroom of Miss Stoner and poison her. No matter how intelligent the reader they would not have the ability to predict this ending. This is a classic ending because it surprises the reader and although the identity of the villain was obvious all the way through the story, it was never clear how he would have murdered his stepdaughter. This is again excellent writing by Conan Doyle. He builds up tension by repeating the events of the past death of Julia Stoner when Holmes re-enacts the sequences of that fateful night with Helen Stoner as a trap for Dr. Roylott. Arthur Conan Doyle uses vast imagery and description to keep the reader glued. It is with this imagery that he creates the tension and creates a sense of tragedy in the mind of the reader. The word black is repeated several times, and this gives a feeling of doom and imbalance. This, paired with nocturnal, silence, darkness and all the other words of sinister imagery creates more tension for the reader. It all builds up and gives the reader an incentive to carry on, to find out what will occur in the next sequence. All the way through there is a mysterious atmosphere and this only pushes the story further into the classic murder mystery genre. Everything down to he scenery and especially the buildings create a tense atmosphere. Conan Doyle wants to put a picture into the mind of the reader, such that they can almost see exactly they are reading about. Grey, lichen-blotched stone windows broken picture of ruin. All these are distinct factors of a house that can be picture in an infinite number of different ways for each individual reader. As this essay concludes the Speckled Band by sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a classic murder mystery story. All the criteria in the second paragraph have been fulfilled. There can be no argument that Sherlock Holmes is the greatest fictional detective in the whole of English literature and Arthur Conan Doyle is, without doubt, the most memorable writer of classic Murder Mystery stories up to the present day. In Praise of the F Word Essay
According to, In Praise of the F Word, by Mary Sherry tens of thousands will graduate high school with meaningless diplomas. Those with meaningless diplomas are the ones whoââ¬â¢s been passing along even though they donââ¬â¢t truly understand the materials taught to them. Sherry argues that our educational system is to blame for cheating those students out of a proper education; however, an easy remedy is for teachers to use the trump card of failure. Sherry claims that before students can concentrate, the teacher needs to get their attention first. I agree with Sherry that itââ¬â¢s unfair to those student cheated by our educational system but her trump card of failure doesnââ¬â¢t solve the problem. Instead, it feels more like a threat to the student than a motivation. Her method is incompatible for all students because all student are different and it takes a teacherââ¬â¢s involvement to understand, not a teacherââ¬â¢s threat. Sherry used blame the studentââ¬â¢s lack of concentration to the class but instead she now blames the failure to get the studentââ¬â¢s attention. No matter what distraction are at hand for the student, the teacher needs to get the studentââ¬â¢s attention first. Sherry states that there are many ways to do this depending on the teaching style but one sure way is the trump card of failure. She points out an example of her son who was lacking attention in class and then received the trump card of failure. It resulted in her son finishing the semester with an A. I feel like Sherryââ¬â¢s argument is incomplete. She doesnââ¬â¢t acknowledge that all students are different, and that some come from a more rugged background than others. Different students need to be treated differently, so one method will not work on all students. For example, there are students that plainly do not understand the material taught to them so instead they make excuses. Teachers will see the studentââ¬â¢s excuse as a lack of attention and fail that student but instead all that student needs is a bit of guidance. Sherryââ¬â¢s method will not work for students that are afraid to ask for help. Furthermore, the threat will not help the student but give the doubt in their abilities. A tool for motivation turns into a tool for discouragement. Instead of facing the challenge head on with the help of the teacher, the students are left alone with the threat ringing in their ears. Students that canââ¬â¢t take the pressure eventually drop out, students that can just keep to themselves and barely passing by. I admit that Sherry brings up a good point; In order for a student to succeed in school, they first need to be attentive. Teachers need to find way to get the studentââ¬â¢s attention but Sherryââ¬â¢s one all be all way will not help the teacher nor the students. Sherry implies that students perceive education as less important compared to their adult counterparts. no matter what environments they come fromâ⬠students will not put school as a top priority on their list. Her argument was that for adults, even with complications in life i. e. unemployment, drug, abusive relationship, still make an effort towards higher education. Sherry states that compared to the adults, students rather be carefree while on cruise control through school. I wholeheartedly agree with Sherry that students would rather have a fun stress free school life instead of a prison, but I have a problem with her implications of a ââ¬Å"terrible environments. Sherry hints that environments does not affect a studentââ¬â¢s involvement in school but i think sheââ¬â¢s severely inaccurate. Where a student come from, i. e. his lifeââ¬â¢s background, greatly affect what kind of person that student will turn out to be. For example, a student can come from a background that greatly values education; at the same time, another student can come from a background that could care significantly less about education. Not everyone is molded the same, there are students that are eager to learn, while there are also students that would refuse the help of a teacher. Sherry claims that the threat of flunking can be used as a positive teaching tool; a show of confidence by the teacher and parent to the student. However, She also completely fails to specify why students fail in the first place. There are students who doesnââ¬â¢t value education because of their unsupportive parents. Sherryââ¬â¢s son might be an inaccurate example because not all students have an english teacher as a parent. My friend Hao is a perfect example. Hao and I were best friends in middle school and freshmen year high school. His parents are always working so heââ¬â¢s exceedingly relaxed towards school. Everytime I hang out with him heââ¬â¢s either playing video games or watching movies. Eventually the lack of care for school caught up with him and he was held back for another freshman year. We try to keep in touch but our friendship grew apart because we arenââ¬â¢t in the same grade anymore. Sometime we would go weeks without seeing each other and the intervals just got longer each time. The times I do see him, I can tell heââ¬â¢s miserable. He dropped out without telling me and to this day I still wonder if I encouraged him alittle more about school, maybe he wouldââ¬â¢ve graduated with me. To my friend, Hao, school was just not important to him and even a threat of failure will not convince him otherwise. In his world, games were more important and school is just a nuisance. He was never taught the true value of an education by his parents. I know heââ¬â¢s not alone and there are many students like him. Although their world might not be gaming, it could be something else like friends, drugs, intercourse, etc. Sherryââ¬â¢s trump card of failure would of failed them, instead they need support not threats. While Sherry may claim that the success of the trump card of failure in the past. I would like to point out that things are forgotten for a reason. In this care the trump card of failure is deemed ineffective against the youths of today. Her method of teachers using threats against students for their attention will not help but damage. Everyone is unique and teachers need to deploy unique tactics to encourage students. A word of threat can only get so far, but the consequence greatly outweighs the worth.

Saving Fossil Fuels Alternative Energy - 2340 Words
Saving Fossil Fuels; Alternative Energy http://www.associatedrenewable.com/content/alternative-energy Saving Fossil Fuels; Alternative Energy Most people today use fossil fuels, but there is a problem that comes with using them. Soon, the world is going to run out of fossil fuels. The average person uses some type of fossil fuel every single day, and cannot imagine a world without them. Can you imagine a world with no gas, propane, or coal? Better yet, can you imagine the world without the machines, vehicles, and appliances that are powered by fossil fuels. Fossil fuel is not the only form of energy, though. There is also alternative energy. We must start using alternative energy. We must start using alternative energy, or we willâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When in its pure form, hydrogen is odorless, colorless, tasteless, and highly flammable, however it is not poisonous. Hydrogen energy can power electrical generators, vehicles, and airships. Airships are aircrafts that stays in the air using gases like hydrogen and helium. Airships include blimps and zeppelins. (Schlager and Weisblatt, 136)) Hydrogen was first produced in 1671 by Robert Boyle. He produced the gas by dissolving iron in acid. It was not officially recognized as a gas until 1766, when Henry Cavendish proved not only that hydrogen existed, but also that it was 14 times lighter than air. Laurent Lavoisier named the gas hydrogen using the greek words ââ¬Å"hydroâ⬠(water) and ââ¬Å"geneâ⬠(formingâ⬠). Before Lavoisier named the gas, it was called ââ¬Å"inflammable airâ⬠, because it was so likely to explode. (Schlager and Weisblatt, 136) Scientists believe that hydrogen energy could become a significant power source in the future. It can power vehicles, and does not pollute very bad. There are many benefits, but there is one big problem that is very hard to overcome. The hydrogen must be pure. It is very hard to produce large amounts of pure hydrogen energy. (Doeden, 53) Bioenergy Another type of alternate energy is bioenergy. Bioenergy is produced by biofuel which is produced by biomass. Biomass is recently living organic matter that can be burnt. Examples of biomass are wood, dung, and plant matter. These, when mixed with gasoline produce biofuel. Biofuel creates
